Manufacturing output handover to sales with dependable availability

Sales needs to know what finished output is genuinely available, which orders it can fulfil and what remains held, incomplete or reserved. If production completion and sales availability are treated as the same event without clear controls, customer promises can be made against stock that is not ready.

A useful handover connects production status, quality release, inventory location, reservation and dispatch readiness. It should make exceptions visible without forcing sales to interpret detailed shop-floor records.

Manufacturing output and sales availability handover

Define when output becomes sellable and fulfilment-ready

The handover should reflect the real operating gates between physical completion and customer delivery. Each status needs a clear owner and business meaning.

Production completion

Record finished and partial quantities against the work order, including remaining work, scrap and rework. A closed order should not hide unresolved output.

Quality and release

Separate physically completed stock from stock approved for normal sale. Holds, concessions and pending checks need visible status and authority.

Location and reservation

Transfer released output to the correct inventory location and apply reservation rules consistently. Sales should see what is available after existing commitments.

Customer and dispatch handover

Connect available output to the order, delivery date, packaging and dispatch requirements. Completion should not be reported as fulfilment if logistics obligations remain.

Questions to settle between production and sales

  • What event makes output complete, and what separate event makes it sellable?
  • How are partial quantities, quality holds and rework shown to sales?
  • When are inventory location and reservations updated?
  • Who resolves conflicts between production priorities and customer commitments?

Use one recent order where sales and production had different views of availability. Map each status change and identify where information was delayed, ambiguous or manually re-entered.

Create one shared definition of available output

Bring the production record, sales order and inventory status from a recent handover. Mitrend Digital can help define the workflow and information sales needs without weakening production control.
